The Soul of DFW Experience
Our Original Founder & Co-Founder in 2017
The Soul of DFW's mission is to educate the community on the significance of Black cultural contributions and local history.
Deah Berry Mitchell is the founder and lead storyteller of The Soul of DFW, the award-winning Black history and culinary bus tour company she launched in 2018 with co-founder Dalila Brent, acclaimed writer, avid food lover and veteran small screen producer. In 2022 after Dalila moved out of state, Deah continued operating after making a few small adjustments. An adjunct history professor at Tarrant County College and PhD candidate, Deah brings scholarly rigor to every tour — grounding guests first in the national historical moment, then narrowing the lens to Texas, into Dallas-Fort Worth, and finally into the individual stories and streets that make each tour unforgettable.
A published cookbook author (Cornbread and Collard Greens), food writer, and four-time James Beard Award judge, Deah pairs history with flavor. Every The Soul of DFW tour is a moving classroom and a moving table — stopping at sites significant to Black history and at Black-owned restaurants along the way, where guests sample the food and hear directly from the owners themselves. As a food writer, Deah draws out the stories behind the plate, interviewing entrepreneurs on the bus so their journeys become part of the tour's narrative.
The result is a tour experience built on original research, real relationships, and a teaching method no one else has replicated — one that moves guests from the big picture of history down to the personal story of the person standing in front of them.

Deah Berry Mitchell
Founder & Lead Historian
I'm a lifelong Black culture historian born and raised in Northeast Texas and a proud sixth-generation Texan. A double graduate of Southern Methodist University, I enjoy traveling and immersing myself into other cultures. I have previously called Houston and Fort Worth home, and currently reside in Dallas. Currently pursuing my Ph.D. in history at the University of North Texas. While vacationing in 2017, I had the idea to produce a bus tour that would combine my two passions: cuisine and local cultural history. When I got back, I suggested to my friend and public relations manager, Dalila Thomas, that we partner together to produce this new concept. In February 2018 we officially launched! I relaunched the new and improved tours in April 2022 after pandemic restrictions were eased under my newly formed 'umbrella' company — Nostalgia Black. Tourism is one of the services offered to amplify Black history and increase knowledge of cultural heritage and traditions. Currently pursuing my PhD in History, I am passionate about expanding our knowledge of local Black history. I'm planning to expand into other test markets soon.
Pick up a copy of my book published in early 2019, 'Cornbread & Collard Greens: How West African Cuisine and Slavery Influenced Soul Food'!

Tour Experience Manager
I'm a hometown girl — born and raised in Mesquite, TX, just east of downtown Dallas. A double graduate of Baylor University, I'm a lifelong learner with a love for traveling, experiencing new cultures, discovering new foods, and seeing new places. But no matter where my travels take me, my roots will always be here in Texas!
With a professional background in higher education and operations, I'm proud to serve Soul of DFW Food & Black History Bus Tour as Tour Experience Manager. From pouring mimosas and welcoming guests to helping capture that perfect photo, I'm passionate about creating an experience that feels fun, personal, and memorable from beginning to end.
One of my favorite tour memories was celebrating Juneteenth with the Joppa community in South Dallas. They welcomed our group with open arms and created an afternoon filled with celebration, remembrance, history, and the family-reunion vibes we all know and love.
I can't wait to have you aboard the Soul of DFW bus and help you experience the history, culture, food, and stories that make our community so special!
